Blame Abba Chapter 4

Part 10 Jeff again

It was about half an hour before closing time that Saturday. Eric had just sent me off since we were very busy and I hadn't had a break since we opened. I sat in the back room, behind the bar, sipping on my lager. Then Jeff appeared, looking very sheepish, at the door.

"Donna, can I have a word?"

I looked up. My, he was looking smart, shirt and tie on, hair slicked back, he was out to impress someone. Then I realised. Me!

"Sure, Jeff," I replied. "Come on in."

He did, and sat opposite me on the other upright chair. I turned the TV off and looked at him. He really was nervous. I thought I knew why, and I was right.

"Donna," he started.

None of the 'Don' from last week, certainly for the moment I was female to him.

"About last weekend. Please, don't interrupt. I don't know why, it was different for me, very strange. I didn't think I would feel like that. But it was great fun and -"

He hesitated, blushing, then summoned up the courage.

"I want to be with you again."

I felt flattered, really flattered.

"I'll tell you what, Jeff. I have to finish my shift in a moment, then I am off in an hour. Why don't we go in the bar and you can buy me a drink. Then maybe we could go out somewhere afterwards. And after that, well, who knows....?"

I had him there. I was to be his girlfriend, in public this time, for an hour. All the bar would see us together, and then he would have to be seen out with me. The thought really excited me. I expected him to object but he just smiled and led the way back into the bar.

I let him buy me a G&T, which I rarely had in working hours, and we chatted in between me serving the other customers. I kept putting my hand on his and smiling sweetly, I even leaned over and kissed him at one stage. Roger was there with a girl, Martin wasn't that time, and didn't seem embarrassed at all. Just after closing time I crept back into Room 4 and changed, ready to go out on the town.
